Who handles an animal problem in Batavia?
| What's happening | Who to call |
|---|---|

| A stray dog or cat | Batavia Police, (630) 454-2500.1 Not a wildlife operator. |
| Your address is in unincorporated Kane County, outside city limits | Kane County Animal Control, (630) 232-3555.1 |

Kane or DuPage: does the county line change anything?
Batavia is split between Kane and DuPage County, according to the Census Bureau.7 Inside city limits, the side of the line doesn't change the first call, because the city routes all animal-related concerns to Batavia Police.1 Outside city limits, the city points residents of unincorporated Kane County to Kane County Animal Control.1 This page doesn't yet cover unincorporated DuPage County.
Which city rules touch on wildlife?
- No hunting or killing animals in town. Under city code, it's unlawful to hunt or kill any animal in Batavia other than as the law or an ordinance allows.4 The city's coyote page repeats that point.2
- Garbage stays tightly covered. Solid waste has to sit in a suitable container that is tightly covered.5 Containers can't go out before the day ahead of collection, and empties have to come back in by 8 p.m. on collection day.5
What does the coyote page say about feeding animals?
The police department's coyote page, which credits its information to Kane County Animal Control, says not to feed any wild animals, raccoons included.2 It also advises keeping garbage in secure containers, keeping meat scraps out of compost, bringing in pet food and bird feeders, and clearing out wood and brush piles where animals can hide.2
Which wild places sit near town?
Glenwood Park, a Forest Preserve District of Kane County site in Batavia, is on the east bank of the Fox River.6 It has wooded floodplain islands below an old dam, and a creek that flows into the river there.6 For an animal that has crossed from places like that into a home, the guides on bats in the house, a raccoon in the chimney and animals under a deck explain the next steps.
Hearing scratching or scurrying?
Match what you hear against noises in the attic at night before deciding who to call. For something happening outside business hours, there's after-hours help.
