Geneva, Illinois · Kane County · Facts checked Oct 2026
Geneva has its own rules on trapping, poison and garbage.
Inside city limits, the city code makes it unlawful to trap game animals unless a state permit allows it.4 When an animal is the problem, Kane County says city residents should contact local authorities first, and it sends a wild animal stuck in a house to a licensed nuisance wildlife removal service.2
Who handles an animal problem in Geneva?
| What's happening | Who to call |
|---|---|
| Someone was bitten or scratched by a wild animal | Wash the wound with soap and water and see a doctor right away. The health department or animal control should also be told.10 |
| A bat is loose inside your home | If you woke up with it in the room, or it was near a child, keep the bat and call your doctor or the health department.10 For a bite or possible exposure, the Kane County Health Department lists (630) 208-3801.9 The county removes and tests a bat only after a possible exposure, and inside city limits the first call goes to local authorities: Geneva Police, (630) 232-4736.1, 2 |
| A wild animal acting sick or aggressive | Geneva Police, (630) 232-4736.1 City police work with Kane County Animal Control on these calls.2 In an emergency, dial 911.1 |
| A coyote in the neighborhood | Report a confirmed sighting through the city's online form. Nobody watches that form around the clock, so call 911 in an emergency.6 The city also says to call 911 if a coyote attacks a person.7 |
| A stray dog or cat | Geneva Police first, (630) 232-4736.1, 2 Kane County Animal Control and its shelter are in Geneva itself, at 4060 Keslinger Road, (630) 232-3555.3 Not a wildlife operator. |
| A calm animal living in your attic, walls, chimney or under the deck | Kane County says a wild animal trapped in your house or on your property is a job for a licensed nuisance wildlife removal service.2 That can be this site's advertiser or anyone on the Illinois DNR list. |

What does Geneva's city code say?
- No trapping game animals without a permit. Hunting or trapping game animals within city limits is unlawful unless a permit authorizes it.4
- Poison aimed at animals is restricted. It's illegal to leave poison where pets or wildlife can reach it in order to harm them, except pest-control products the state has approved.4
- Curbside garbage has set hours. Household garbage goes out in a covered container no earlier than the day before collection and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day.5 Empty containers must be off the curb by 8 p.m. that day.5
What does the city's coyote advice ask of homeowners?
The city adopted a coyote management plan in 2015 and keeps monitoring the coyote population.6 Its coyote Q&A says not to keep garbage cans outside if possible, or at least to use containers with tight-fitting lids.7 It also asks residents to bring pet food and water dishes inside, keep grills clean, pick ripe garden produce, and stop feeding other wildlife or keep spilled feed from piling up.7
Is there green space close by?
Fabyan Forest Preserve sits on the Fox River just south of Geneva, with entrances on Route 25 and Route 31.8 When a wild animal ends up inside instead of out there, start with the guide that matches: an animal under the deck, squirrels in the attic or a raccoon in the chimney.
Has Kane County had a rabid bat lately?
Yes. A bat found on Aug. 16, 2026, in a backyard in unincorporated St. Charles tested positive for rabies, the Kane County Health Department announced.9 It was the first rabid bat reported in the county since 2024.9 Don't handle bats, even ones that look sick or dead.9 The bats in the house guide covers what to do when one gets in.
Not sure what's in the walls?
What different sounds can mean is laid out in noises in the attic at night. If it's late and the animal is in a living space, see after-hours help.
