An Elburn mailing address doesn't always mean village police will answer.

The village police department's jurisdiction stops at the incorporated village limits, and homes in unincorporated Kane County that share the mailing address get the Kane County Sheriff's Police instead.2 A 911 call reaches the right agency either way.2 Inside the village, an officer is sent through 911, because calls to the police office are answered by administrative staff who can't dispatch.1

Before you compost, set bait or put out the trash

  • No poison left out. Nobody may lay out poison, or poisoned food or drink, for any animal or bird on someone else's property or in any unenclosed place (section 608.02).5
  • Compost without meat. Backyard compost can't include cooked meat scraps, fish or animal carcasses, or animal feces, and it has to be turned so it doesn't draw rodents and pests (section 624.02).6 The bin belongs out of front and side yards, at least 20 feet from homes on neighboring lots.6
  • A 3 p.m. start for trash day. Garbage, refuse and yard-waste containers can't reach the curb before 3 p.m. the day ahead of collection, and they have to be back by 9 a.m. the day after.6 Whatever goes out has to be in a covered or secure container.6

A squirrel preserve on Route 38

The village points out that Elburn has no park district.7 Forest Preserve District of Kane County sites with Elburn addresses include Elburn Forest Preserve, on Route 38 about half a mile west of Route 47, and Johnson's Mound, on Hughes Road.8, 9 The district calls Elburn Forest Preserve its squirrel preserve, where fox, gray and flying squirrels share an oak and shagbark hickory savanna woodland.8 Johnson's Mound is a heavily wooded gravel hill that glacial ice and water left behind.9 The state's Nature Preserves Commission lists it as a 185-acre Illinois nature preserve, dedicated in March 1992, with sugar maples dominating the forest on the hill and a small spring-fed fen in a low spot at the base of its north slope.10 For squirrels already inside a house, see squirrels in the attic. Other intruders have their own guides, for something living under the deck and for a bat indoors.

Is that sound in the attic or inside a wall?
